When should I call a doctor on the weekend?

If you have a medical problem that cannot wait for a review by your regular GP the following week, we are here to help. If you are not sure whether you are safe to wait to see your regular GP, then you can book with our service and discuss your condition with one of our doctors, who will call you before attending for a home visit. There is no cost to this phone consultation.

Common conditions our weekend doctors review

Gastroenteritis Skin infections
Urinary tract infections Falls. Minor injuries inc. minor head injuries
Respiratory infections Abdominal pain
Unwell child assessment. Children with fevers Headaches and migraines
Body aches and pains. Back pain and muscle strains Acute worsening of chronic conditions
Ear infections Vertigo

For non-urgent medical problems such as chronic health conditions, you are best booking an appointment to see your regular GP. The exception to this is if you have an exacerbation of your chronic condition that requires more urgent attention. For any life-threatening conditions, you should attend your nearest Emergency Department or call 000.

Is Night Dr open Public Holidays?

Yes. Night Doctor operates on all Public Holidays providing care to patients when their regular GP is closed. We recommend that you call to book early as with very limited availability of other medical services, we have a high demand for our doctors on public holidays.

Can doctors come to your home?

Night Doctor is a home visit service meaning our doctors attend you home for your consultation. We do not operate any clinics. Waiting in your home for a doctor at the weekend is a much better alternative than waiting in the local Emergency Department and because your doctor calls you before attending, you can rest assured that you are safe to wait.

Do weekend doctors give prescriptions?

Our doctors carry a large selection of free starter medications to get your treatment started. Where indicated, you will be provided with a prescription which you can fill at you convenience. To find a weekend pharmacy open nearby, use our pharmacy locator.

Our fees

We bulk bill all patients who have DVA Gold cover or who live in a disability care home or nursing home. For all other patients there is a small out-of-pocket fee. Our Saturday and Sunday GP fees are the same as during the week. Higher fees apply on public holidays. Use the selector to see what fees apply for your visit or see our fees page or call to speak with our receptionist for more information. We do not carry or accept cash. We do accept split payments using a debit or credit card.

The fee for telehealth depends on the length of the consultation and the start time of the consultation.

Urgent conditions

After 11pm there is a Medicare rebate for all patients with urgent conditions. In order to access this rebate Medicare requires the Doctor to justify that you have an urgent condition (i.e your condition is at risk of deteriorating before 8am the next morning). The consultation must take place over a video call rather than a standard phone call.

The rebate is significantly higher than for the standard rebates. So while the total fee you pay is higher your rebate is also higher by the same amount and the out of pocket gap amount is unchanged.

Urgent Telehealth Video consult after 11pm: $210.75

Non-urgent conditions

If the Doctor cannot justify to Medicare that your condition is at risk of deterioration before 8am, they cannot charge the urgent item and the fees for consultations before 11pm will apply instead.

Determining what is urgent is difficult, as very little guidance is provided by Medicare. Our receptionists can run your issue past the doctor prior to your consultation and can let you know if you will be bulk billed or a fee will apply.

We understand this situation is not ideal but we are trying to do the best we can to help patients and operate within Medicare billing guidelines.
